Officials in the Canada's capital Ottawa have made quite the (shuttle)cock-up!
Instead of a memorial to honour local Jack Purcell - known as 'the stick doctor' for repairing hockey sticks and giving them to local children - sculptures for his namesake were erected instead.
The curved metal light fixtures, which bear a striking resemblance to un-stringed badminton rackets, would appear to reference Jack Purcell of Guelph, Ontario, a world badminton champion who designed the ubiquitous Converse runners that bear his name.
According to the Ottawa Citizen, local councillor Diane Holmes was none too impressed at the architectural firm who designed the monument: “I think he just Googled ‘Jack Purcell’ and the only thing that comes up is the badminton player. The Ottawa-hockey-stick-helper-out-of-kids doesn’t come up on Google.”
The original design was to string the light fixtures like a racket but officials have attempted to save face by saying that they were actually designed to be futuristic trees.
Local residents aren't fooled by this though. Resident Eric Olmstead gave his suggestion to the paper: “Maybe we could ship them to Guelph and say, ‘Hey, we’ll trade you something.’”
