The Central Bank of Ireland is to spend €500,000 to move its iconic golden ball from outside its current headquarters on Dame Street in Dublin to its new base on North Wall Quay.

The Sunday Business Post reports the artwork - officially called "Crann an Oir" which means "Tree of Gold" - weighs several tons, and is to be moved to the new €140m eco-building.

The move will require approval from the planning department of Dublin City Council.

While members of the public will be able to object to any plans as per normal planning regulations.

The bank uses the golden ball as its logo, so it does not want to leave it behind.

The money used to move the sculpture would also cover its replacement on Dame Street with a new feature.

The piece, by the late Eamonn O'Doherty, was chosen in 1991 after a competition.
