The government is being called on to raise the threshold for the inheritance tax.

The current figure is €225,000, after which the person who inherits must pay a 33% charge.

It was lowered from €381,000 after the economic crash, when house prices began to fall.

The surge in property prices in Dublin is reportedly leaving many bereaved adult children at risk of losing their family homes because they cannot pay the tax.

Fianna Fáil Councillor in Dublin and legal advisor Jim O'Callaghan says this is an issue that affects all classes of people:
