Several buildings in Castlebar were evacuated this afternoon after two viable explosive devices were discovered.

Gardai requested assistance from the army bomb disposal team this afternoon after they were alerted to two devices in the Moneen area of Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Gardai put a cordon and road closures in place. The bomb disposal team arrived at 1pm.

The devices were made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion and were taken away for further examination. They were later confirmed as viable.

The scene was declared safe at 2 pm.
