A 14-year-old boy has died following a farm accident in Co Carlow this afternoon.

His brother was seriously injured in the incident and is in a stable but serious condition in hospital.

The accident happened around two miles outside the town of Ballon just before noon.

It is understood the boys were injured when a trailer they were travelling on overturned and ended up in a river.

They were brought to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny where one of the boys passed away.

The HSA is investigating the incident and has described what happened as a freak accident.
