In contention for three Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards show, John Crowley’s Brooklyn is the little Irish movie that could, a star-making turn from Saoirse Ronan and a sweet story for the ages of young Irish people feeling the bittersweet reality of emigration. And now one of the film’s characters, in the shape of Julie Walter’s Mrs Kehoe, is getting a TV spin-off series from the film.
Screen Daily reports that the BAFTA and Oscar-nominated producers Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey, best known for their work on Brooklyn and An Education, are currently developing a series about the Irish emigrant and the young women who live in her New York boarding house. Rumours of the show first started circulating in the autumn of 2015, with Colm Tóibín pitched the concept in order to secure the rights to his characters.
It is unclear whether Walters, twice an Oscar nominee herself, will return for the role, but it is not expected that the show will go into production until after the film has ceased its US theatrical run and made its home media release on DVD and Blu-ray.
Brooklyn has so far grossed $38m (€34m) dollars at the box office. Debuting at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, the film broke Irish cinema records by having the biggest opening weekend for an Irish film since 1996’s Michael Collins.
