Michael Wolber and April Hartley had picked the perfect place for their wedding – Rock Springs Ranch in Oregon, US. They couldn’t wait to declare their love for one another with all their friends and family in the perfect outdoor location.
Except when their ceremony came round on Saturday, firetrucks pulled up with sirens blaring, warning the wedding party that the Two Bulls wildfire was heading straight for them at a dangerous pace.
Hartley's father welled up as he told guests that they would have to relocate.
During the confusion that followed, the firefighters must have had a change of heart, because one guest came running into the ceremony with her arms waving. The ceremony – albeit an abbreviated one – could go on.
So, as firefighters looked on, Michael and April rushed through their vows in half-time, racing to make sure they were able to have their dream wedding in their perfect place.
The wedding minister, Liz Leavitt, quickly married the couple, everyone cheered, and the evacuation began.
"I've had a lot of surprises, being in ministry," Leavitt said. "But I have to say: I've never had this happen before."
Josh Newton, the couple’s photographer, was snapping photos of the whole thing and ended up grabbing some pretty incredible shots.
Newton uploaded one photo to Facebook, and it has since gone viral – as of Monday morning, it has garnered over 5,100 "shares" and nearly 67,000 "likes". He posted on his page saying, "I've never seen anything like what happened next.
"Everyone moved the entire wedding to a park in Bend, all with smiles and good attitudes. It showed everyone at the wedding what really mattered - the people and the couple."
After they both said “I do,” Michael, April, and their friends and family rushed off to their back-up location safely.
As of Monday, the wildfire was still burning more than 6,800 acres.
