A Co. Wicklow town council has taken steps to help its homeless residents during the cold snap.

The doors of 2 public buildings in Bray will remain 'on the latch' over the coming days to provide shelter for homeless people in the town.

It follows the death of 33-year-old homeless man Paul Doyle in Bray last weekend.

The council says it will assess the weather situation from day-to-day.

The body says it will make a decision on how long to leave the buildings open based on the duration of the cold snap.

Council warns: Be prepared for cold weather

The council has already warned residents of severe weather this winter.

It says that some activities "can become difficult or even hazardous when severe weather occurs".

"However, by taking some simple steps you can reduce the impact of such events" it adds.

It is urging people to read the Winter Ready 2012 booklet which gives information on being prepared, providing practical advice for coping during episodes of severe weather, as well as giving contact details of organisations and agencies that can provide guidance and assistance.

The main message they say is to be prepared, stay safe and know where to find help should you need it.

Cathaoirleach of Bray Town Council is Mick Glynn.

He says they felt they had to do something to help people in the short-term at least.
