There has been a breakthrough in the taxi driver dispute with the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

Both sides have agreed to enter into mediated talks this evening in an effort to find a solution to the strike action.

It is effecting thousands of airport users.

The latest develop comes after failed talks earlier today.

President of the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation John Usher said earlier the meeting was ‘pointless’.

“We’re at a meeting here, and the meeting ended last night and we came back to a meeting here this morning to try and negotiate a settlement” he said.

“We got the same offer as we got last night; the meeting here this morning has been pointless, it hasn’t been very successful”.

“We now have to go back down and tell our members that we’ve spent an hour, an hour and a half here – and we haven’t got anywhere”.

“So that’s basically it – we’re still at stalemate” he added.

Taxi drivers downed tools yesterday and are refusing to pick up passengers at the airport until parking spaces that were taken away from them in a holding area are given back.

Sources say a location for the talks tonight has still to be decided.

However it is thought they will be held either at the airport or in Dublin city centre.

Jerry Brennan is General-Secretary of the National Irish Taxi Association.

He spoke with The Right Hook here on Newstalk before he went into the talks.
