A body of a man has been found in a burnt out vehicle in a housing estate in Derry.

The discovery was made in the early hours of this morning after reports of a stolen vehicle which was involved in a crash in the Galliagh Estate.

At around 4.15am it was reported to police that a red coloured Mazda  had hit a lamppost around Fairview Road.

The car is believed to have been stolen in the Oakfield Avenue area of the city earlier.

The vehicle is reported to have caught fire and travelled along Fairview Road for a short distance before coming to a stop at Galliagh Park.

Police say they are working to establish if other people were in the car at the time of the incident.
