Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican Party nominee in the race for the White House, has responded to this morning’s Brexit referendum result by calling the UK’s decision to leave the European Union as “a great thing.” Trump congratulated the voting public for having “taken back their country.”

The presidential hopeful made his comments as he arrived at Trump Turnberry, his luxury golfing resort in Ayrshire, Scotland, where he was met by a small group of protestors accusing him and his political rhetoric of “racism and bigotry.”

BBC journalists asked Trump to comment on the result, which saw the Leave campaign clinch victory over Remain by 52% to 48%.

“I think it’s a great thing that’s happened. It’s an amazing vote, very historic,” Trump said, shortly after his helicopter had touched down at the resort.

“People are angry all over the world. They’re angry over borders, they’re angry over people coming into the country and taking over and nobody even knows who they are.

“They’re angry about many, many things in the UK, the US and many other places. This will not be the last.”

Reacting to questions that a vote to exit the European Union could lead to political rifts across the United Kingdom, Trump said the UK “will heal.”

“I said this was going to happen and I think it is a great thing. Basically, they took back their country. That’s a great thing.”

When asked to comment on the news that Prime Minister David Cameron had announced he will step down as the leader of the Conservative Party, Trump said: “Well, that’s too bad.”
