LISTEN: The baby girl was found abandoned in Dublin last Friday

Gardaí are emphasising that the investigation into a baby found abandoned in Dublin last week is not a criminal one.

Baby 'Maria' was discovered by passers-by in Rathcoole one week ago today.

The newborn was discovered inside a Marks and Spencer bag, with a Penneys fleece throw and black bin liner wrapped around her.

Gardaí have been canvassing people in the area this afternoon, in the hope of jogging their memory in relation to the events of last Friday.

The baby is currently being cared for by the Child and Family Agency, Tusla.

Gardaí are appealing for her mother to contact them, as they are concerned she may need medical attention.

Superintendent Brendan Connolly has reiterated his appeal for the mother to come forward.

Child protection expert, Shane Dunphy, says the mother may have felt she was doing the best thing for the child.

At a press conference on Monday, a number of replica items were shown in the hope some information would come to light.
