Around €350m worth of old Irish pounds is still missing 19 years after the move to the Euro.

The Central Bank has said just under IR£400,000 was converted into Euro last year in more than 1,000 different transactions.

One Punt is worth €1.27 and the bank is reminding people that they can still exchange any old notes and coins they may have.

It said €347m is still out there waiting to be exchanged.

These people in Dublin told Newstalk they haven't been lucky enough to find any old punts lying around in recent years.

“I’m very surprised there is so much about now – I can’t understand why people would have that,” said one.

“Maybe it is people who have got it in their sheds and forgot all about it, that kind of thing.”

“I think anybody that has money, especially old money, would have definitely, definitely cashed it in by now,” said another.

“Anybody that I knew that had money got rid of it there and then, at the time. Sure, if you went with a couple of hundred quid into the bank now, they would probably be scratching their heads.

“Half these people wouldn’t even know what it was today.”

The Central Bank said the IR£400,000 converted last year was the smallest amount since the changeover in 2002.

There is no time limit on exchanging old money for Euros.
