Gardaí have mounted a series of armed checkpoints across the north side of Dublin city following the shooting dead of Alan Ryan yesterday.
The 32-year-old was known to Gardai for his links to the Real IRA.
He was shot dead as he lay injured on Grange Lodge Avenue shortly after 3:30pm yesterday afternoon.
Gardaí concerned about reprisals have placed armed checkpoints around the Donaghmeade area of the city.
A second man was also injured in the shooting but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Mr. Ryan died after he was taken to Beaumont Hospital while the second man is still being treated for his injuries.
Ryan had a string of previous convictions including for taking part in a Real IRA training camp in Meath in 2001 and separately served a prison sentence for possession of a firearm.
He was due to go on trial along with 3 other men for threatening a publican in Dublin last year.
A burnt-out silver Volvo car was discovered by Gardaí on the Hole in the Wall Road shortly after the shooting.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have saw the car, the gunmen or the shooting itself to contact them on the Garda Confidential Line or at Coolock Garda Station.
Security Editor with the Irish Independent is Tom Brady.
He says Alan Ryan had many enemies.
