A group of politicians are set to recommend a proposal calling for more openness regarding children's parentage.
The proposal, which would potentially rule out anonymous sperm donation in the future, is to be recommended by the Oireachtas Justice Committee today, with the group's report suggesting children born in Ireland should have the right to know who their genetic parents are.
Experts have said it is important for a child's sense of identity to know who their biological parents are, as well as having access to related medical information.
The proposal suggests a dual birth certificate to make sure the information is readily available. The document would contain details of both the 'social parents' and the genetic lineage of a child.
The cross party group are discussing a new Children and Family Relationships Bill - which also deals with surrogacy and same sex adoption. That bill is due to become law later this year.
