An American State Department official has been killed in an attack on a US consulate in Libya.
Armed militia stormed the compound in Benghazi.
They were protesting at a film deemed offensive to Islam which was produced in the US.
Demonstrators have also torn down the American flag at the US embassy in Cairo.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has condemned the attacks which happened on the anniversary of 9/11.
The two incidents related to what protestors said was a film that insulted Prophet Mohammad.
However it was not clear which film prompted the protests.
Reports say shooting and an explosion was heard from inside the closed-off area around the embassy.
