Official garda figures show that a total of 73 significant seizures were carried out. The drugs involved included cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ecstasy.

'Operation Nitrogen' continues to be the flagship for the investigation into cannabis grow houses in Ireland.

As part of this operation, almost 29,000 illegal plants worth €23m were seized during a total of 394 raids.

Last year's operations dealt a major blow to the drug trafficking community both here and abroad, and their work is paying dividends this year too.

Just three months ago, more than €6m worth of heroin and cocaine were seized during separate raids in Louth and Dublin.

Low-level dealers are also being targeted: just a few weeks ago, some 30 suspects were arrested as part of a six month undercover operation in the north inner-city.

As well as high profile seizures, he Garda National Drug Unit says it will also sustain its commitment to reduce the desire for illicit drugs through strategic partnerships with various government departments and other organisations.
