The family of Alan Turing has delivered a petition to the prime minister's office demanding 49,000 men prosecuted under the gross indecency law be pardoned.

The petition, which has over 500,000 signatures, follows a royal posthumous pardoning of Turing himself in 2013. According to the Guardian, it was presented by his great-nephew, Nevil Hunt, his great-niece, Rachel Barnes, and her son, Thomas.

Turing, who was the subject of this year's Oscar-nominated The Imitation Game, was instrumental in code-breaking operations at Bletchley Park during World War II. In addition to his war efforts, he is widely considered as the father of modern computing.

Turing was convicted of gross indecency with a 19-year-old man in 1952 and was chemically castrated. Two years later he died from cyanide poisoning, likely a suicide.

Rachel Barnes, Turing's grand-niece, spoke about the petition:

“It's very significant for us because Alan Turing was given a royal pardon in 2013 but we think it is totally unjust and unfair that the other 49,000 have not been given a pardon,”
