Airbnb will make free hotel rooms available for survivors of domestic abuse who can't find space in a refuge.

There's been an increase of 39% in the number of calls to the Women's Aid helpline since the COVID-19 pandemic began, while gardaí say calls related to domestic violence have increased by a quarter this year.

Airbnb is now working to have temporary accommodation available free of charge when refuge accommodation is not available.

Meanwhile, domestic violence specialists will work with those being accommodated in the hotel, with Safe Ireland coordinating the initiative.

Catriona Gleeson from Safe Ireland said the project is a very welcome stop-gap because of the acute shortages in the sector.

However, she said it can't last forever, and that survivors of domestic abuse need a permanent, state-backed solution.

She said: "We understand once the donation been expended, it will be suspended unless donors come from elsewhere.

"It's a very welcome temporary measure, but in no way to be interpreted as being the longer-term solution - and it's only going to be suitable for a number of women.

"But we really welcome the leadership of Airbnb in this project, and others who made it happen."

More information on domestic violence services can be found at www.Safeireland.ie, with the Women's Aid 24-hour National Freephone Helpline available on 1800 341 900.
