Investigations are underway into the technical difficulties on board an Aer Lingus plane that made an emergency landing in New York.

The Shannon-bound flight returned to the ground just 15 minutes after taking off from the same airport, after it reported a number of technical problems.

Emergency services attended the scene as the flight landed again at around 7.30pm local time.

Passengers were bused back to the terminal building and no-one was injured in the incident.

Aer Lingus says flight EI 110 returned back to JFK "due to a technical fault with the aircraft".

It adds that the aircraft landed safely and emergency services were in attendance as a precaution.

"All 110 passengers were disembarked safely and will be accommodated on the next available flights", the carrier adds.

ABC News in New York has broadcast this recording of the pilot contacting Air Traffic Control.
