A group of Consultant Psychiatrists say they are deeply concerned at the government plan to legislate for the X-Case. Around one-third of the 300 Consultant Psychiatrists here say they believe it would mean legislating for suicidality.
They are also insisting that there is no basis in medical evidence that abortion is a treatment of suicidal ideation.
Members of the group briefed TDs and Senators on their concerns in Leinster House this morning.
Dr. Bernie McCabe is a spokesperson for the Consultant Psychiatrists.
Draft legislation has been prepared and is currenlty under the spotlight for the reported conclusion of a plan to subject suicidal women to a panel of 6 doctors before being granted a termination.
The government has promised that legislation, according to the ruling on the X-case in 1992, will be in place by July.
Speaking in Dundalk, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the process will not involve any change to the law.
