The winning picture from 2014’s National Geographic Photo Contest has been revealed, with the victorious image capturing a very modern take on life.

Brian Yen’s ‘A Node Glows in the Dark’ captured a commuter in Hong Kong looking at her phone, and claimed the title of the year’s best photograph.

"I feel a certain contradiction when I look at the picture," Mr Yen told National Geographic. "On the one hand, I feel the liberating gift of technology. On the other hand, I feel people don’t even try to be neighbourly anymore, because they don’t have to."

The nature category was one by a photo of migrating Tanzanian wildebeests, captured by Belgian photographer Nicole Cambre. Triston Yeo of Singapore won the places title with an image of the thermal spas in Budapest.

The winning photographs, along with other highly commended images from 2014, were chosen from a pool of more than 9,000 entrees from 150 countries.
