An investigation is underway after a five-month-old baby boy died in a crash on the Athlone bypass.

It happened yesterday afternoon.

The infant received serious injuries when the car he was travelling in collided with a barrier yesterday afternoon just after 2pm.

The baby boy was removed to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, where he was pronounced dead.

A girl (3) was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The male driver and female passenger, who are both aged in their late 20, were uninjured.

The road was closed for a time but re-opened yesterday evening.

Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to contact them at Athlone garda station on 090-649-8550.
