New research from the Panelling Centre shows that 96% of tradespeople say they’ve had to step in to fix or complete a homeowner’s DIY attempt at fitting their own kitchen.

Incorrect measurements and not consulting a professional for layout or design advice are seemingly the two biggest problems faced.

Pete Finn, also known as ‘Pete the Builder’ on Home Rescue told Lunchtime Live that these projects can make things even more complicated if a person leaves it too long to ask for help.

“I think it’s well intended work that just comes to a roadblock at a certain point, [that] is usually what you get a call back for,” he said.

“So, if somebody is committed to do a DIY job on their own kitchen, it usually means that they have taken a couple of steps in terms of their DIY career at that stage.

“Because it’s certainly not a starter project to start ripping out your kitchen and trying to refit it.”

If you are set on taking up DIY projects as a hobby, Pete recommended starting “as low as you can go”.

“Start simple, start with something that you you’re going to find manageable,” he said.

“Paint a room, then move onto painting another couple of rooms, then try and put up a shelf, flat pack units, outdoor gardening, [that] kind of stuff is really good as well because it’s a little bit forgiving.

“Get competent and get a bit of confidence before you start going as far as your kitchen.”

According to Pete, the power of good research when it comes to a project should not be underestimated.
