Tens of thousands took part in this morning’s ‘Darkness Into Light’ walk for Pieta House, with organisers estimating as many as 80,000 took part in total.
The 5k walk took part in 37 venues across Ireland as well as in London and Sydney. The walk began at 4.15am and participants were completing their runs and walks at dawn.
Two of the biggest single events were in Dublin’s Phoenix Park and in Limerick, where an estimated 10,000 took part. Registrations for this year had increased 300% on last year.
“We had 39 venues this year, 37 in Ireland, right across the country, and then one in London and one in Sydney. It was extremely uplifting and it was giving such a wonderful message that people now want to do something about suicide and they’re not afraid to get help,” said Joan Freeman, CEO of Pieta House.
