Just 30,000 of the 500,000 septic tank and other waste-water treatment system owners around the country have registered their tanks.
There is less than a month to go until the €5 fee is upped to €50 for their mandatory registration.
The charge is part of the scheme introduced by the Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan ahead of inspections.
It could see many householders forced to carry out upgrades to their systems.
From September 28th those who have not already registered will have to fork out a €50 euro instead of the current €5.
It was introduced for the first 3 months of registration by the government after a public outcry.
