It is 27 years since the Chernobyl disaster and campaigner Adi Roche says the world must learn from its mistakes and end the dependence on atomic energy. She is calling on the government to promote clean and renewable energy at a European level to prevent any further nuclear accidents.

She says millions of people are still living around 435 reactors operating in 31 countries. Adi Roche says that is something that needs to change.

Ukrainians have begun marking the anniversary with a midnight vigil. Thousands of people arrived to pay their respects to those who were killed during and after the meltdown.

32 were killed immediately when the nuclear reactor exploded on April 26th 1986.

The city of Pripyat, 3 kilometres from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, was once home to 45,000 people. It was completely evacuated the day after the accident

According to Ukrainian government figures more than 4,000 of those who took part in the clean-up operation died as a result of exposure.

The blast saw heightened radioactivity being spread right across Europe.
