Cyclists were fined by gardaí 244 times in the first two months of new road rules.

The vast majority of the fines - 144 - were issued for breaking a red light.

Failure to have appropriate lighting on a bike accounted for the next highest number of fines at 44.

Seven new offences were introduced for cyclists at the end of July to encourage better behaviour, to stop cycling in pedestrianised areas and to make it mandatory to have a light on all bikes.

You can be fined for any of the following offences:

  • Cycling without reasonable consideration.
  • Failing to have front and rear lights on your bike and failing to light them during darkness
  • Cycling on a pedestrianised street
  • Breaking a red traffic light
  • Breaking a red cycle traffic light
  • Failing to stop for a School Warden sign
  • Crossing a stop line, barrier or half barrier at a railway level crossing, swing bridge or lifting bridge, when the red lamps are flashing.

Anyone found in breach of the rules faces a €40 fine.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD, said: "Last year, 13 cyclists were killed in Ireland. I want to see that number reduced and a greater emphasis put on cycling road safety. I introduced this measure with a view to highlighting the dangers that exist for cyclists and encouraging them to take their safety more seriously."

The Minister added: "By allowing for fines for cyclists to be issued in place of direct summonses to Court, Court time is also freed up and a more immediate enforcement tool provided to An Garda Síochána."
