Gardaí are investigating a serious collision between a car and a pedestrian in Tullamore this morning.

The 21 year old man was seriously injured when he was struck by a car on Church Road at around 4 o'clock.

He was brought to the Midlands Regional Hospital, but was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where is is said to be in a critical condition. 

The driver of the car was uninjured.

The road is currently closed pending a technical examination and local diversions are in place.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
