100 Irish troops will return home from the Golan Heights this evening after a six-month deployment.

Members of the 50th Infantry Group will be greeted by their friends and families at Dublin Airport this evening.

The soldiers returning to Ireland are mainly from the South and Midlands.

The infantry group has been serving with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

The troops are being replaced with members of the 52nd Infantry Group, who have now been deployed.

Members of the Irish Defence Forces have been assisting the UN mission at the Golan Heights, in which they monitor a ceasefire line between Israel and Lebanon.

The task has become more challenging in recent years in light of the Syrian civil war.
