Today on the show we are reviewing two beers from a very successful brewery. The beers that we are tasting to-day are from deHuyghe Brewery (I know, it sounds like the Swedish Chef from the muppets won a competition to name a brewery, but there you have it!). The first beer is Delirium Nocturnum. The second beer is brewed by deHuyghe in cooperation with a guy called Jan Fleurkens. It is called Mongozo Banana.
Delirium Nocturnum
Beer Style - Strong Dark Ale
Alcohol by Volume - 8.5% a.b.v.
Brewed by - deHuyghe Brewery
Brewed in - Ghent, Belgium
Delirium Nocturnum is a strong red-brown Belgian Dark Ale that pours with remarkable tan lacing. Rich and fruity, with candy sugar, toffee, green apple tartness, dark fruit, a hint of chocolate, sweet candied fruits, molasses – all with an underlying earthiness. A truly delicious dark ale from deHuyghe.
Mongozo Banana
Beer Style - Fruit Beer
Alcohol by Volume - 4.5% a.b.v.
Brewed by - deHuyghe Brewery with Mongozo
Brewed in - Ghent, Belgium
Banana beer is truly Africal. It is the traditional beer of the Masai people of Kenya and Tanzania (who call the beer mbege). Mongozo have taken a recipe for such a beer, and brewed it with deHuyghe to give a beer that, one has to say, is all about the bananas. Sweet candied banana flavour comes through on the palate and aroma, and merges with a beer that is bright golden in colour with a bright and full white head. Quirky and distinctive, well balanced, tasty and incredibly drinkable.
