Two Documentary On Newstalk radio projects have brought home awards from this year’s prestigious New York Festival Radio Awards.

The awards ceremony for the international radio awards festival was held in New York earlier this week, and is considered to be the 'oscars' of radio.

Athena Media's science series Science is Everywhere (Newstalk/BAI) won Silver in best Science and Technology programming.

And Pavel Barter's Castles Candles and Kubrick (Newstalk) won Silver in best Culture and Arts programming.

Series Producer of Documentary on Newstalk, Francesca Lalor said:

“I’d like to congratulate our documentary makers for their success at these prestigious awards. They were up against radio makers from all over the world, and we’re delighted with their achievement. It’s a great sign that Documentary is a growing medium in radio, and Newstalk are very excited to be part of that. We have broadcast a great many fabulous documentaries in recent times, and have many more original and exciting programmes in the works”.

Programme Details:

Castles Candles and Kubrick:

‘Castles Candles and Kubrick’, a radio documentary produced by Pavel Barter, aired on Newstalk 106-108 as part of Documentary on Newstalk’s Autumn Season,.

Produced by Pavel Barter, Castles, Candles and Kubrick tells, for the first time, Castles, Candles and Kubrick tells, for the first time, the story behind the making of Barry Lyndon in Ireland, featuring interviews with cast and crew from the film.

In the summer of 1973, Director Stanley Kubrick (Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket) arrived in Ireland to make his period masterpiece Barry Lyndon. On an overcast night the following January, the director fled Ireland on a ferry from Dun Laoghaire. Within 48 hours the entire production also abandoned their stations.

What role did Ireland play in Barry Lyndon? Did Kubrick's preceding film, Clockwork Orange, affect the production? What was it like working with arguably the greatest, notoriously perfectionist, director of the 20th century? Why did Kubrick flee Ireland? And why is Barry Lyndon considered the greatest movie of all time by fellow directors such as Martin Scorsese and Lars Von Trier?

Castles, Candles and Kubrick features Brian W. Cook (The Wicker Man, The Shining), Luke Quigley (Braveheart, In The Name of The Father), Terry Clegg (Gandhi, Out of Africa), Patti Podesta (Memento), and Gay Hamilton (The Duelists).

Science is Everywhere:

Science is Everywhere, a series exploring Science aired on Newstalk 106-108 as part of Documentary on Newstalk’s Spring Season.

Science is Everywhere was presented by young scientist Dr Lara Dungan who explores everyday questions about our world and lives, from the water we drink, to why we fall in love. Dr Dungan is already an established voice on Newstalk’s regular science programme Futureproof. She is a biologist with a PhD from Trinity College Dublin and is now studying medicine at University College Dublin.

Presenter of Science is Everywhere, Dr Lara Dungan said:

“I’m delighted Science is Everywhere has been recognised with this award. My passion in life is to share the way science works. We wanted to create a series that surprised and intrigued people by showing the science behind everyday things like water, sport, love. Thank you to the Athena Media team and to Newstalk, our broadcaster, for all their hard work in making the series a success.”
