Lonely Planet's latest budget guide has found that holidaymakers visiting Dublin will spend an average of €120 per day whilst in the Irish capital.

That makes Dublin more expensive than the likes of Berlin, Madrid and Tokyo.

However, the trip won't cost you as much as time spent in Edinburgh or Amsterdam.

The Best Things In Life Are Free analysed over 60 cities worldwide and how they work out for travellers on a shoestring budget, devoting four pages to Dublin.

The average daily cost was calculated by taking into account mid-range accommodation, travel, entry to a cultural attraction, three reasonably priced meals, and one pint of beer or glass of wine.

Among the free or "almost free" attractions recommended are Trinity College Dublin, the old Houses of Parliament on College Green, Glasnevin Cemetery, the Forty Foot in Sandycove and the Phoenix Park.

The Dublin entry states:

“Ireland’s capital is a charismatic and occasionally confounding city, where high culture and light-hearted craic go hand-in-hand, and history is literally etched into every corner.

“Locals are generous of spirit and garrulous by nature, and in the legendary public houses, the iconic black stout runs freely... but rarely cheaply.”
