Contactless payments and new technologies such as Apple Wallet and Android Pay are starting to take off in Europe, but an Australian man has gone one step further. Meow-Ludo Meow Meow (yes, that is his real name) has a near field communication (NFC) chip implanted into the back of his thumb.
Meow is the founder of Biofoundry, a community lab in Australia and is also a Science Party candidate in the upcoming Australian election.
The NFC chip was inserted into the back of Meow's thumb back in April at a piercing studio in Sydney. Meow told Mashable described the sensation
"If you think about it like a cat or dog microchip, it's quite quick and quite painless," he said.
At present, if Meow places his thumb to the NFC reader on his phone, it can detect the business car information the chip carries. He is working with technologists Nathan Waters and Phil Ogden to develop the functionality of the chip.
Their aim is to work with the Commonwealth Bank's EFTPOS tablet, which is a contactless payment system used in many shops in Australia. The team are also going to work to integrate the ship with Opal, Sydney's version of the Leap Card.
