Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has been presented with a 2,500 strong petition against the holding of large scale commercial concerts in Marlay Park.

Residents of neighbouring housing estates, market traders and regular visitors to the park are among the signatories.

They are urging DLR County Council "to protect Marlay Park - its wildlife, habitats, flora and fauna", and calling on the council "to respect and protect local residents, park users and park employees".

South Dublin Protect Our Parks Chairman Brian Murphy says that residents and visitors to the park have to "contend with traffic gridlock, noise pollution and anti-social behaviour as 40,000 people descend on the area for each gig... The park is as good as out of bounds for weeks on end as the infrastructure for the concerts is put in place".

It comes after the council signed a new contract, allowing concerts in Marlay Park for the next five years.

It will allow promoters MCD to apply for a licence to stage up to six nights of concerts during the summer, with a maximum overall capacity of 210,000.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council received around €450,000 in revenue from the concerts this year.

Welcoming the new contract, Local Fine Gael Councillor Neale Richmond said: "The new contract signed by the Council and MCD is a realistic and thorough one that will allow top class concerts to continue to be staged in Marlay Park while also imposing sensible restrictions to protect local residents.

He explained that the revenue raised from this year's concerts "is ring fenced for recreational use. Last year alone we saw huge investment in the footpaths in Marlay Park, the upgrade of Tamplin's Cottage and the renovation of the Craft Courtyard all thanks to funds raised through the concerts".

Barry Saul, Councillor for the Stillorgan area, said he was 'delighted' to have signed the contract.

Marlay Park has hosted concerts now for 15 years, including gigs from the likes of Kanye West, Oasis, Arcade Fire and Tom Jones.

Since 2013, it has also hosted the weekend-long Longitude Festival.
