The Tánaiste Joan Burton says she never anticipated the need for the army to guard Irish ATM machines.

But Ms Burton says she expects the subject to be dealt with in the forthcoming book by her predecessor, Eamon Gilmore.

The Finance Minister Michael Noonan has confirmed there were discussions in 2012 about whether the army could be needed in case of a major financial crisis.

His comments come after the Taoiseach Enda Kenny claimed yesterday he had been told to put the army on standby to guard banks and ATMs as one weekend approached.

Speaking in Madrid, Mr Kenny said this had been the content of a discussion with Central Bank Governor Patrick Honohan.

"The governor told me, it looks like this weekend, a few years ago, you'll have to put the army around the banks and around the ATM machines, and introduce capital controls like they had in Cyprus. So we've pulled back from that brink" Mr Kenny said.

Minister Noonan told reporters in Dublin this morning he is not aware if the Taoiseach received such a briefing - but he knows that there were discussions about putting a plan in place.

Although Ms Burton was not the Tánaiste at the time, she says that was not something she was aware of.
