Dublin City Council (DCC) has revealed plans to build a new mini-town in the capital.

'Poolbeg West,' south of the Docklands beside Ringsend, will have space for 3,000 new homes.

The 34-hectare site will have a mix of retail and residential blocks stretching up to 50 metres, or nine storeys.

"A maximum of 25-30% one bed units, and a minimum of 15% three+ bedroomed units, with the balance being 2 bed units," the plans state.

Poolbeg West will include the former Irish Glass Bottle site which takes up 10-hectares - and 17 hectares owned by the Dublin Port Company which will continue to be used for port operations.

The Council hopes this will ease the housing shortage by providing one and two bedroom homes for young families.

It will also have 100,000sq m of commercial and retail space which could accommodate up to 8,000 workers.

DCC hopes this will ease pressure on the property market by providing, "housing in a sustainable urban setting."

It is also set to have a primary school and three public parks.

The DCC notes that, "Dublin City Council supports uses associated with media/ digital media and film production."

Dublin Bay Studios hopes to build a production facility on the site, it welcomed the council's decision and said that it hopes to:

"Create Ireland’s largest full-service film, TV and digital content production studios at Poolbeg West in Dublin City Centre; studios on a scale large enough to compete internationally and built in the inner city so that they will also be a catalyst for a cluster of all the many technologies, crafts, specialists, talent, finance, arts, culture, University R&D, and digital services that it needed for modern production, not only for film but for video games and virtual reality production."

It added that the studio would create 1,800 direct jobs and a further 1,800 indirectly.
