Women's Rugby World Cup

This year, Ireland plays host to the Women's Rugby World Cup 2017 with a host of games being played in Dublin and Belfast. Proudly sponsored by Mastercard®, the pinnacle tournament for Women's rugby kicked off on the 9th of August and runs until the 26th when the final will be held in Kingspan Stadium, Belfast.

Ireland hasn't won the tournament before but with a strong side, this could be our year! To support the team, you can head along to this weekend's games with Ireland taking on Japan at 5:15pm on Sunday, August 13th in the UCD Bowl.

Other fixtures this weekend include:

Hot Press Covers Exhibition

Hot Press is internationally recognised as the magazine that helped to inspire U2, Sinéad O’Connor, The Corrs, Glen Hansard, The Script, Imelda May, Hozier, Kodaline - you name a successful Irish band and they’ll have been on the cover of Hot Press.

This whimsical and educational exhibition provides an insight into the many social changes of Ireland throughout the years, telling the story of music and culture through slide shows, video interviews, multi media exhibits, and of course, the legendary front covers of Hot Press magazine.

Dublin Horse Show

A sign of the end of summer in Dublin, the Horse Show at the RDS has always been a fantastic event jam packed of action for the entire weekend.

With an array of national & international show jumping competitions and world class equestrian entertainment, there’s something for everyone, including gourmet food stalls and local arts and crafts. Sunday’s programme features the exciting Hunt Chase event, as well as Lorenzo the Flying Frenchman, a daredevil display of acrobatics and equestrian skill from the stuntman and his troop of horses.

Dún Laoghaire Harbour Race

The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Race is a 2,200 metre race around the circumference of Dún Laoghaire Harbour battling fellow swimmers, reaching marker buoys, avoiding any number of obstacles and taking on the might that is the Irish Sea. No biggie then?

The good news is it’s a handicapped race, meaning you don’t have to be an Olympic Swimmer to be in with a chance of taking home top prize. A day filled with camaderie and energetic crowds cheering on their friends and family, either be brave and take the plunge to join to race, or grab a coffee from a local stall and stroll along the route.

Free Live Comedy in Accents Lounge

Hands down the cosiest chill out spot in town, Accents Coffee & Tea Lounge hosts a fantastic live comedy event every Saturday night at 9.30pm, and it’s free.

A mug of their famous hot chocolate (choose from white, milk, or dark chocolate drops to swirl into hot milk) while sitting on one of their plush sofas listening to up and coming Dublin comedians is a no-brainer way to spend an evening.

Galway

The Connemara 100

The Connemara is a 100 mile endurance run with a 30 hour limit that pushes athletes to their extreme boundaries. The tough course sees participants run from Clifden through Letterfrack, Lettergesh, the Inagh Valley, Maam Cross, Leenane, Inagh Valley again, then on to Roundstone, Ballyconneely and back to Clifden to complete the whopping 100 miles.

Pack a picnic and follow the route to cheers the runners on, making sure you stick around for the end of race celebrations in Clifden village on Sunday evening. A well earned pint of Galway’s best brew will be needed by athletes and spectators alike after this gruelling test of endurance.

Galway Pride Festival

The annual Galway Pride Festival celebrates everything that makes the city the joyous, cultural magnet it is, with parades, street entertainers, art performances and insightful evenings of information and awareness all planned for the weekend.

This year is the 28th year the festival will run, making it the longest continuous running Pride Parade in Ireland. Make sure not to miss comedy with Katherine Lynch on Friday night, the legendary colourful parade on Saturday at 2pm, and the Dog Show (yep, it's pup heaven come true) on Saturday afternoon.

Cavan

Taste of Cavan

Much more than just a food festival, Taste of Cavan returns with a stellar line-up of chefs, over 120 stalls showcasing the very best of local and regional produce, and exciting entertainment from Cavan Big Band.

There’ll be live cookery demos all weekend (now is the time to learn how to make poached eggs people!), as well as a craft beer and gin corner in the arena venue. You can even avail of an intimate, 40-minute cookery masterclasses where participants cook in pairs under celeb chef Neven Maguire’s supervision, or if that sounds too much like hard work you can always just wander around the different stalls, tasting yum samples of local eats and baked goods. We won’t judge if you go back for a second taster of home baked bread...
