WH Smiths Ireland has reported a 22% increase in sales to €23.7 million for the year to the end of August 2015.

The local arm of WH Smiths has bookstores in Dublin and Shannon airport (as well as in Arnotts, Dublin) and clearly benefited from growing air travel in Ireland.

Increasing footfall in Dublin Airport in particular, where the business has had a Terminal One presence since August 2013, accounted for a spike in sales.

Dublin Airport welcomed a record 25 million passengers in 2015.

Irish staff numbers have risen from 74 to 87, with increasing wage bills and other costs resulting in a net profit increase from €1.3 million to approximately €1.5 million.

In terms of their biggest sellers, The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins topped the adult fiction list, outselling Fifty Shades of Grey by over two to one. Colm Tóibin's Brooklyn and Anne Enright's The Green Road also fared well.
