It has finally been confirmed that the Ukrainian capital of Kiev will host the Eurovision Song Contest 2017.

The decision was intended to be announced on August 26th, but the press conference was pulled at the last minute, which lead to fans of the Contest concerned that Ukraine might have pulled out of hosting the competition next year.

Hosting the event is an expensive prospect, with BBC reporting that Azerbaijan spent £48m (€56.7m) after building the Baku Crystal Hall specifically for the event in 2012, while Denmark spent £36m (€42.5m) in 2014 and Austria spent £28m (€33m) in 2015.

With the city finally determined to host the show next year, Jon Ola Sand, who oversees the contest for the European Broadcasting Union, said "Kiev presented an excellent case and we are looking forward to working together to create the most electrifying show yet next May."

The semi-finals of Eurovision 2017 will take place on Tuesday 9th and Thursday 11th May, with the grand final taking place on Saturday 13th May.
