Pepsi is facing a political backlash as Donald Trump supporters have called for a boycott of the company's products following comments attributed to its CEO.

During an interview with The New York Times, the company's CEO Indra Nooyi said that "all" of her staff were in mourning and crying following Mr Trump's victory and that she felt the need to reassure non-white, female and LGBT workers that they are still safe.

"Nothing has changed because of this election - what we heard was election talk. We will all come together and unify the country. The process of democracy happened, we just have to let life go on," she continued.

Stories soon speared across right-wing news sites reporting that she had said that the US President-elect's supporters should "take their business elsewhere." The CEO never made this comment and Ms Nooyi has said that she misspoke when she said that "all" of her staff had been upset by the result.

The hastag #BoycottPepsi has been used across social media to promote the protest.

This comes a week after New Balance faced a similar backlash after quotes attributed to its CEO were reported without context and seemed to express the shoe brand's support for Mr Trump.

The company subsequently issued a statement saying that these reports were false and that it "does not tolerate bigotry or hate in any form."
