Over 1,000 people attended a parade this weekend celebrating the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare.

The event, which took place in London, featured musicians, performers, local dignitaries, school children, and a ceremony for the unveiling of a birthday flag bearing Shakespeare's image. Prince Charles toured the writer's former home and graveside as part of the commemorations.

The Duchess of Cornwall is expected to join him later for a TV gala performance featuring Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen and David Tennant at the town's Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

In honour of his great work Hamlet, attendants were encouraged to toss springs of rosemary as a funeral bier of flowers was pulled through the streets.

Earlier today, US President Barack Obama was treated to a special performance of scenes from Hamlet at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London.

Shakespeare, who wrote almost 40 plays, over 150 sonnets, and coined well-known phrases still widely used to this day, died in 1616.
