Steven Mnuchin has emerged as the front-runner to be named US Treasury Secretary under Donald Trump - he's a candidate who was plucked straight from Hollywood.

The financier rose through the ranks of Goldman Sachs before becoming a player in the movie industry with RatPac-Dune Entertainment.

Mr Mnuchin is credited as the executive producer of number of films including Batman v SupermanMad Max: Fury Road, The Accountant, The Intern, The Lego Movie and Entourage.

He is a Trump ally and was the national finance chairman for Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign.

Mr Mnuchin is a Wall St insider - he spent 17 years of his career with Goldman Sachs where he became a partner before starting his own fund and moving into entertainment.

The Hollywood Reporter describes him as an "important but relatively low-profile [movie] industry moneyman."

Donald Trump's Treasury Secretary is set to have a particularly difficult job as they will be tasked with overseeing the renegotiating of trade deals and major tax reform if Mr Trump follows through on his campaign promises.

This appointment would stand at odds with Mr Trump's attacks on Hillary Clinton for being too close to Wall St and Goldman Sachs in particular.

He previously said the bank, "robbed our working class, stripped our country of its wealth, and put that money into the pockets of a handful of large corporations and political entities."

The Financial Times reports that Mr Trump met Gary Cohn, Goldman’s president and chief operating officer at Trump Tower yesterday.

He has donated money to both the Democratic and Republican parties - including contributions to Hillary Clinton.
