The family of a murdered Limerick pensioner say they are stunned by her death.

78-year-old Rose Hanrahan was found dead at her home in Thomondgate on Friday afternoon.

Gardaí have not revealed how she was killed and are examining CCTV footage from the area.

Rosie's sister, Helen Carmody, was due to spend Christmas with her in her home.

"We always spent (Christmas) down in her house, cause she'd cook dinner.

"It's only when all that happens that it'll really sink in, you know.

"But you'd wonder why - I mean she's never done anything to anybody, she was very good to everybody".

She also says her sister was never nervous at living alone.

"She was very independent - she wouldn't be nervous, she wasn't a nervous person, as long as things (were) locked up and she went to bed and she was grand.

"And especially with houses at either side of you (and) houses directly across from you - you think that's not going to happen.

"If you lived isolated in the country, you would think along those lines.

"It's very strange really, I'm stunned really".
