Say what? Donald Trump's extensive back catalogue of controversial comments

From racially inflammatory comments and mocking the disabled through to insulting the parents of a dead soldier, there are no shortage of insults uttered by the Republican presidential hopeful.

Despite Donald Trump's rich back catalogue of offensive comments, none have yet succeeded in derailing the campaign of the Teflon tycoon in his run for the White House.

Here is just a selection.

:: "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people." 16th June, 2015, speech launching his campaign.

:: "He's not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured." 17th July, 2015, referring to Senator John McCain, a former Navy pilot who was tortured while held prisoner for more than five years during the Vietnam war.

:: "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever." 7th August, 2015, comments during a TV interview about Megyn Kelly, one of Fox News' moderators in the first Republican debate.

:: "Now the poor guy, you ought to see this guy. 'Ah, I don't know what I said! I don't remember!'" 24th November, 2015, physically mocking New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, who has a congenital joint condition.

:: "I think, for me, nuclear is just the power, the devastation is very important to me." 15th December, 2015, answering a debate question about America's nuclear arsenal.

:: "Donald J Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on." 7th December, 2015, reading from a statement by the Trump campaign.

:: "It is always a great honour to be so nicely complimented by a man so highly respected within his own country and beyond." 17th December, 2015, returning Russian President Vladimir Putin's praise of him as a "talented person".

:: "He's running his country and at least he's a leader, unlike what we have in this country." 18th December, 2015, defending Mr Putin against allegations he had ordered the killing of journalists.

:: "So if you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of 'em, would you? Seriously. Okay? Just knock the hell - I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. I promise. I promise." 1st February, 2016, speaking at a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

:: "Lyin' Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a GQ shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin' Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!" 22nd March, 2016, tweet about his then rival for the Republican nomination.

:: "The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment." 30th March, 2016, speaking at a town hall meeting in Green Bay, Wisconsin, about what should happen to women who get illegal abortions.

:: "I was down there, and I watched our police and our firemen, down on 7-Eleven, down at the World Trade Center, right after it came down. And I saw the greatest people I've ever seen in action." 18th April, 2016, speech in Buffalo, New York, where he mixed up the 9/11 attacks with the name of a chain of convenience stores.

:: "Look at my African American over here!" 3rd June, 2016, speaking at a rally in Redding, California.

:: "He was a bad guy, really bad guy. But you know what he did well? He killed terrorists. He did that so good. They didn't read them the rights. They didn't talk. They were terrorists. Over. Today, Iraq is Harvard for terrorism." 5th July, 2016, praising dictator Saddam Hussein at a campaign rally.

:: "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press. Let's see if that happens." 27th July, 2016, at news conference Florida, encouraging Russia to hack into Hillary Clinton's emails.

:: "If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably - maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say." 30th July, 2016, TV interview in which he referred to Khizr Khan and his wife Ghazala, the parents of a Muslim US soldier killed in Iraq. At the Democratic National Convention, Mr Khan had criticised the candidate for his call to ban Muslims.

:: "I always wanted to get the Purple Heart. This was much easier." 2nd August, 2016, speaking at a rally in Virginia where a military veteran presented him with his own medal, which is awarded to US service personnel injured or killed while serving.

:: "If (Hillary Clinton) gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don't know." 9th August, 2016, at a campaign rally in North Carolina, leading to him being accused of inciting the assassination of against his Democratic rival.

:: "ISIS (Islamic State) is honouring President Obama. He is the founder of ISIS. He founded ISIS. And I would say the co-founder would be crooked Hillary Clinton." 10th August, 2016, speaking in a TV interview.

:: "You're living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58% of your youth is unemployed. What the hell do you have to lose?" 19th August, 2016, at a rally in Michigan, explaining why African Americans should vote for him.

:: "We will build a great wall along the Southern border and Mexico will pay for the wall - 100%. They don't know it yet but they're going to pay for it." 1st September, 2016 in a speech in Phoenix, Arizona.

:: "But here's a woman, she's supposed to fight all of these different things and she can't even make it 15 feet to her car. Give me a break. Give me a break." 2nd October, 2016, mocking Mrs Clinton, who stumbled after she felt unwell at a 9/11 memorial service.

:: "This was locker room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago. Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course - not even close. I apologise if anyone was offended." 8th October, 2016, responding after a video emerged showing him making lewd, sexually charged comments about women in 2005.
