President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina are hosting Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla at Áras an Uachtaráin.

This is Prince Charles’s third visit to Áras an Uachtaráin.

Former President Mary Robinson hosted the Prince in June 1995, and President McAleese welcomed him to the Áras in February 2002.

President Higgins has met Prince Charles on a number of occasions - including during the President's State Visit to the UK in April 2014.

The royal couple arrived in Dublin on Wednesday, after spending Tuesday in Northern Ireland for a number of engagements.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall signed the Visitors' Book at Áras an Uachtaráin.

This was followed by a meeting between President Higgins and Prince Charles.

The President and Sabina then accompanied their guests to the Peace Bell in the grounds of the Áras, before going on to meet with a small group of young people who have excelled in the fields of sport, art, music, science, agriculture and advocacy.

Unveiled in 2008, the Peace Bell was designed to mark the 10th anniversary of the Belfast Agreement.

Later on Wednesday, the President and Sabina will host a private dinner for the royal couple.

The official Twitter account of the royal couple also tweeted a photo caption in Irish for the occasion:

They are also due to have a meeting with Taoiseach Enda Kenny during their stay.

A spokesperson for Prince Charles said: "This visit will showcase the strength and vitality of the connections between the United Kingdom and Ireland; and the friendship and partnership that has defined our relationship over recent years.

"The Prince and Duchess's programme will allow them to honour those men and women whose sacrifice in times of conflict shaped our two countries' shared history; and to celebrate all that we do together to cement peace and secure a prosperous future."
