Other events during the trip include receiving an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh, and meeting people from the Irish community in Glasgow.

Minister of State Joe McHugh will represent the Government during the President's Scottish visit.

The trip comes only days after Scotland voted 62% to 38% to remain in the European Union in last week's referendum.

Nicola Sturgeon has indicated her cabinet is preparing to work on legislation to allow for the option of another independence vote.

Later this week, President Higgins and Sabina will also travel to France for an event marking the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.
