Pope Francis has admitted that he stole the rosary cross of his late confessor while he was lying dead in his coffin, telling a group of priests that he had to use 'a little force' to remove it from the dead mans hands.

He says he kept the cross in his pocket for a number of years and now has it inside a pouch which he wears under his robes, touching it whenever bad thoughts come to his mind.
