Egypt's ousted president Hosni Mubarak has been released from detention after almost six years, according to a lawyer.

Mubarak (88) was being held in a Cairo military hospital, but BBC reports that he has now returned to his home in the suburb of Heliopolis.

An appeals court earlier this month cleared the former president on charges of killing protesters during the 2011 uprising that ended his rule over the country.

He had previously been sentenced to life in prison, but the charges were dismissed during a retrial.

Mubarak and his two sons were convicted of corruption in May 2015, but the court acknowledged time already served when handing down a three-year sentence.

His two sons Alaa and Gamal were freed later that year.

Al Jazeera reports that a court last month ordered a fresh corruption investigation into Mubarak for allegedly receiving gifts from a state-owned newspaper.

Mubarak had served as president since 1981 - an almost thirty-year reign that made him the longest serving Egyptian leader since the mid 19th century.

He stepped down following the 'Egyptian revolution' in early 2011, which was sparked by increasing police brutality and other major social issues in the country.

An estimated 850 people were killed when police clashed with protesters during the major demonstrations.

After more than a year of military rule, Mubarak was replaced by Mohamed Morsi in 2012.

Morsi was desposed in coup d'etat after only a year in office. Former military commander Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is the country's current president.
