Samsung Electronics may still be dealing with the global recall of its smartphones but it must now shift its attention to similar potential safety problems with its washing machines.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has warned that a number of its top-load washing machines, made between March 2011 and April 2016, could be faulty and possibly dangerous, following media reports of explosions.

Samsung has admitted to the issue on its website, and confirmed it is in talks with the US watchdog.

In a statement, the South Korean electronics giant said:

"In rare cases, affected units may experience abnormal vibrations that could pose a risk of personal injury or property damage when washing bedding, bulky or water-resistant items."

While it advised consumers with affected models to use a lower speed delicate cycle when washing such materials, it did not mention the models specifically and it is not known if it is limited to the United States.

Consumers can instead enter their machine's serial number to see if they are likely to have a problem.

US customers already filed a lawsuit in a New Jersey court last month, claiming that their machines "explode during normal use."

As for its smartphone business, the company confirmed a global recall of at least 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones in 10 markets in early September. Faulty batteries had been causing some of the phones to catch fire.

Despite all of this, shares in the company were up 2.11% as of Thursday morning.
